Homeless Connect Volunteer Role Descriptions and Requirements

Assisting with bump-in is an important role ensuring the venue is correctly set up and ready for guests to arrive on event day.

This is a worthwhile and enjoyable experience, suitable for individuals, corporate groups and schools. Roles are varied and duties may include:

• Sorting and stacking second-hand clothing and shoes
• Setting up event furniture and erecting event signage
• Sorting through pallets of mixed donated food items and toiletries
• Pre-packing grocery bags

Bus attendants assist guests with their luggage on and off the bus, answer questions and ensure guests have an enjoyable day from beginning to end. Bus attendants also record statistical information (e.g. departure/arrival times, number of passengers getting on and off at each stop).

NB: The 11:30am - 4:30pm shift includes end of day pack down.

Cloakroom attendants work in the cloakroom, where guests and volunteers are able to store items during the day.

Porters work with the cloakroom attendants by assisting guests with their belongings between the cloakroom and the buses. Porters also engage with guests at the food and clothing stores throughout the day offering to store guest’s items in the cloakroom.

Cloakroom attendants and porters assist with packing down the cloakroom area and other areas across the venue.

The clothing store is divided into general clothing, shoes, workwear, and lingerie and is run by The Salvation Army.

The clothing store assistants help guests select shoes/clothing and keep the tables stocked throughout the event.

Clothing store volunteers assist with packing down the clothing store and other areas across the venue.

This role involves directly interacting with guests by providing pre-packed bags of non-perishable food and toiletries.

Food store volunteers assist with packing down the food store and other areas across the venue.

Front of house attendants manage the entrance to the venue and issue colour-coded wristbands to all guests and volunteers.

Front of House Attendants arrive early to coordinate the volunteer sign-in area and manage ID verification. Once the doors open at 8:30am they are also placed at information tents and entrance gates to direct guests and volunteers.

General volunteers assist wherever required. This role may include supporting the team by filling shifts, covering volunteers for lunch breaks, managing queues, giving directions, front of house duties, delivering food, assisting photographers and assisting team leaders.

Another important part of this role includes interacting with guests, helping guests plan their day and providing information about venue layout, ensuring guests maximise the services and activities on offer.

This role requires confident, friendly and adaptable volunteers.

General volunteers assist wherever required. This role may include supporting the team by filling shifts, covering volunteers for lunch breaks, managing queues, giving directions, front of house duties, delivering food, assisting photographers and assisting team leaders.

Another important part of this role includes interacting with guests, helping guests plan their day and providing information about venue layout, ensuring guests maximise the services and activities on offer.

At the end of the event general volunteers will take over for the front of house team on the volunteer desk and help with end of day pack down.

This role requires confident, friendly and adaptable volunteers.

This role is to support the medical team with administrative tasks, appointment bookings and recording statistics of the services provided. The medical team include doctors, podiatrists, dentists, optometrists, physios and registered nurses.

A haircut and a shave can make an incredible impact on our guests self-esteem. Being pampered and treated with kindness is deeply meaningful to guests. Haircuts and barbering services will be provided all day by volunteers. No hair washing or colouring will be required.

You must be a qualified hairdresser or barber and supply your own tools.

Volunteer medical and allied health professionals are an essential part of Homeless Connect. Professionals include:

• General Practitioners, including Doctors and Nurses
• Optometrists
• Dentists
• Podiatrists
• Audiologists
• Chiropractic
• Immunisation services
• Physiotherapists

Requirements:

• Must be a qualified professional / professional in training under supervision
• Must supply own tools for work
• The services that will be required at the event will be discussed between the VQ Volunteer Manager and Team Leader of your group
